Kailash Kher Takes Over Santa Monica Pier with His Sufi Songs
There is no greater star in the Indian music today than Kailash Kher, a revered singer whose prodigious vocal gifts and inspiring personality have made him a household name across the subcontinent.
Kailash Kher, who is a household name in India, is most known for his pop-rock Bollywood jams, sufiana and strong folk songs.
Recently, musician and Indian icon Kailash Kher brought Bollywood to Santa Monica at the fourth concert in this summer’s Twilight Dance Series.
KCRW’s Francis Andertin, MC of the night, introduced Kailash Kher to the crowd as one of India’s most amazing musicians.
“We’ve done a lot of concerts recently but this one will be the most memorable because we got visas yesterday and went from the airport to sound check today!” Kailash Kher said to the crowd after singing the first song of the night.
Although Kailash Kher’s Kailasa was the only main band of the evening, Kailash Kher did not disappoint the people. Fans were dancing, clapping and singing along to Kailash Kher’s tunes the entire night.
Kailash Kher’s third number was a Sufi song for which he also invited a beautiful girl on stage to dance. “The songs are basically love songs with very deep meaning”. He said and dedicated the songs to all the lovers or people who believe in love. He performed songs like ‘Chandan mein’, ‘Babbam bum lehri’, ‘Teri diwani’, ‘Kaise bataun’ etc but people went crazy when he sung his debut song ‘Allah ke bande’ and repeated this song atleast four times.
”The Sufi was also special”, Kailash Kher said, because he mixed different dialects from India and combined them for his lyrics.
The Twilight Dance Series began in 1983 with the success of 1983′s Santa Monica Pier Save the Pier Week, a week-long festival in response to the devastating El Nino winter storms in which 450 feet of the Santa Monica Pier were demolished.
